Delhi
Base · 2 days
The practical northern gateway for Mughal tombs, Old Delhi lanes, imperial avenues and some of India’s strongest regional eating. Give it two nights; trying to “see Delhi” in an afternoon is a good way to start exhausted.
Agra
Short stop · 1 day
Come for the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, not for a leisurely city break. One night is usually enough, with an early Taj visit before the crowds turn the experience into logistics.
Rajasthan
Base · 3–6 days
India’s most satisfying grand-tour circuit: Jaipur’s urban forts and markets, Jodhpur’s cliffside Mehrangarh, Udaipur’s lakefront pause, and the Thar if you have the time. Use three bases rather than racing through every palace town with a driver and a suitcase.
Varanasi
Base · 3 days
A raw, working pilgrimage city where dawn boats on the Ganges and the evening aarti matter more than checking off monuments. It is intense rather than easy—funeral pyres, crowds, noise and narrow lanes are the point, not flaws to be edited out.
Mumbai
India’s best big-city stop for Art Deco and Victorian streetscapes, neighborhood life, contemporary culture and serious eating. It is a living commercial city with punishing traffic and expensive hotels, not a monument circuit or beach escape.
Goa
The obvious place to decompress after the north, but choose your coast: North Goa for restaurants and social energy, South Goa for a quieter beach base. The useful trip includes seafood and old Portuguese-era churches, not just whichever beach strip has the loudest nightlife.
Kerala
Base · 7 days
A slow southwest circuit of Kochi’s old port, Munnar’s tea hills, backwaters and coconut-heavy cooking. It works because road days, greenery and smaller-scale stays force a gentler pace; one houseboat night is plenty.
Tamil Nadu
Base · 6 days
India’s strongest temple-and-food route, running from Chennai and Mahabalipuram through Thanjavur, Chettinad and Madurai. Come for Dravidian architecture, classical culture, filter coffee and cooking with far more range than generic 'South Indian.'
Karnataka
The compelling version is Mysuru’s royal-city ease plus Hampi’s immense, boulder-strewn Vijayanagara ruins; Bengaluru is mainly the air gateway and dining stop. Hampi deserves two full nights and patience with transport, not a rushed day trip from Goa.
Ladakh
Base · 8 days
Leh, Nubra Valley and Pangong form a high-altitude desert trip that feels entirely separate from the plains: monasteries, passes and stark Himalayan light. Acclimatization in Leh is mandatory travel time, not a spare day to fill with sightseeing.
Kolkata and Bengal
Choose it for Bengali food, coffee houses, colonial streets and a dense literary-artistic culture rather than polished infrastructure. Kolkata rewards diners and repeat visitors; the Sundarbans needs several extra days and realistic wildlife expectations.
Meghalaya
Shillong, Sohra and the living-root bridges offer a cool, rain-soaked hill-country counterpoint to monumental north India. It needs enough time to justify the flights and road travel, so treat it as its own trip rather than an afterthought from Delhi.
Classic North India: Taj and Rajasthan
9 daysDelhi (2 days) → Agra (1 day) → Rajasthan (6 days)
The right first trip: Delhi supplies the context, Agra delivers the Taj without overstaying, and Rajasthan gets enough time for Jaipur plus Jodhpur or Udaipur. Use rail for Delhi–Agra, then a car and driver through Rajasthan; do not try to add every fort city or Jaisalmer.
Plan this routeNorth India with Varanasi
11-12 daysDelhi (2 days) → Agra (1 day) → Rajasthan (3 days) → Varanasi (3 days) → Delhi (2 days)
For travelers who want the classic Mughal-Rajput circuit but also India at its most spiritually intense. Keep Rajasthan to Jaipur rather than pretending you can cover the whole state; fly Jaipur–Varanasi if schedules allow, then fly Varanasi–Delhi. The return to Delhi is a deliberate outbound-flight buffer, not wasted time.
Plan this routeSouthern slow travel: Kerala and Tamil Nadu
13 daysKerala (7 days) → Tamil Nadu (6 days)
A markedly gentler, greener counterweight to the north: Kochi, Munnar and one backwater night in Kerala, followed by Chennai, Mahabalipuram and Madurai in Tamil Nadu. Hire a driver for Kerala and the Tamil Nadu temple circuit; fly Kochi–Chennai rather than burning a day forcing the country-scale jump overland.
Plan this routeLadakh properly
8 daysLadakh (8 days)
A self-contained high-altitude trip for landscapes, monasteries and road travel: base first in Leh, then go to Nubra Valley and Pangong before returning to Leh. Two early Leh days are for acclimatization, and the final Leh night is a weather buffer. Do not bolt this onto Rajasthan or a beach holiday unless you have substantially more time.
